What is the difference between “hosted by” and “powered by?” (Web Design)?

Hosted By | Powered By

Question:

I would like to know the difference between “hosted by” and “powered by.”

I am currently redesigning my website and I see these two words: “hosted” and “powered.” I was thinking of writing, “Hosted by Dream Host. Powered by Angelfire” on my website because I registered my domain through Dream Host but my website are uploaded via FTP and kept at Angelfire. (I actually have it redirect to this my personal website when people type in the registered domain in the address box). Could you please help me clear this up. Thank you for your time and help.

Answer:

Those terms are traditionally used in footer links.

“Hosted by” is the web hosting company that is hosting the site.

“Powered by” can refer to any number of things, including the platform that the site is using like WordPress or Joomla. It’s also used by people who distribute free themes or templates because it gives them a backlink to their site or affiliate offering.

Quite frankly, it doesn’t do you a darn bit of good to use them unless you can monetized those links.
